What India sells, and what it buys.

Every container that leaves an Indian port and every tanker that docks is declared to customs, line by line. Added up each month, those declarations tell you what the country makes for the world, what it cannot do without, and whom it depends on.

July 2026, final tables
Trade balance

India's merchandise trade balance in July 2026: what it sold abroad minus what it bought. A minus sign is a deficit. Services, which India sells well, are not in this number.

Exports
$44.3 bn
What the figures say

In July 2026 India exported $44.3 billion of goods, 19.8% more than in the same month a year earlier, and imported $76.2 billion, 17.4% more. The trade deficit widened to $31.9 billion, from $27.9 billion in July 2025. The gains were broad: 61 of the 98 export categories were higher than a year earlier, and 64 of the 98 import categories.

Exports were lifted by mineral fuels, up 62.0% to $7.2 billion, by electronics at $6.3 billion and by machinery at $4.1 billion, while sugar fell 41.3% and knitted clothing also slipped. Imports were driven by electronics at $12.3 billion, up 40.3%, by fuel at $21.5 billion, or 28.2% of the import bill, and by machinery at $8.1 billion; aircraft fell 27.0% to $0.9 billion, and gold rose 4.7% to $4.2 billion. The largest deficit was with China, at $12.5 billion, then Russia at $8.5 billion, while the largest surplus was with the United States, at $3.6 billion; India ran a deficit with 80 partners and a surplus with 136. Over April to July, exports came to $171.8 billion, up 15.7%, and imports to $292.3 billion, up 19.2%.

What they do not say

These are goods, not services: in July 2026 India exported $44.3 billion and imported $76.2 billion, leaving a deficit of $31.9 billion.

A dollar value mixes price and volume: a rise in fuel or gold imports can be dearer oil or dearer gold, not more of either.

Growth on a year earlier depends on that month too; exports were up 19.8% and imports 17.4%.

Underneath the totals, refined fuel and electronics lead exports, electronics and fuel again lead imports, aircraft falls furthest on the import side, and by partner the surplus with the United States is $3.6 billion against a deficit with China of $12.5 billion.

The first estimate for August 2026 puts exports at $43.8 billion, provisional and subject to revision.

We do not know from these tables how much of the change is price and how much is volume.

The first estimate for August 2026 is already out: exports $43.8 bn and imports $70.7 bn (provisional quick estimates, revised when the final tables arrive a month later).

What it has to do with your house

Eight goods, monthly, US$ million

The phone in your pocket, the oil in your kitchen and the petrol in your scooter all have a line in these tables. India now sells phones to the world by the billion dollars a month. Most of the edible oil it cooks with is bought abroad, palm oil above all. Most of the crude its refineries turn into petrol and diesel arrives by tanker, and some of that diesel and jet fuel goes straight back out as exports.

That is what these numbers are. In 2025-26 India bought 16.9 million tonnes of vegetable oil, 721 tonnes of gold and 259.8 million tonnes of crude oil, and sold 21.6 million tonnes of rice. Each line below is one of those goods, month by month since 2017.

Phone and telecom exports rose from $76 mn in January 2017 to $4,301 mn in July 2026, the second-largest of India's 1,215 export headings that month (behind petroleum products)

How to read this

Each panel is one HS heading, the four-digit level of the international customs code, which has not changed meaning since 2017. Scales differ: crude runs to billions of dollars a month, rice to hundreds of millions. Read the shape and the number in the corner, not the height against the next panel.

Values are dollars at the time of each shipment. A taller crude line can mean more barrels or dearer barrels; the plate on prices and volumes below separates the two.

As of July 2026

Phone exports were $4,301 mn in July, against $76 mn in January 2017. Crude imports were $14,212 mn and gold $4,162 mn.

03

How to read these numbers

What is counted. Merchandise trade is goods that physically cross India's customs border, valued when they are declared. Exports are counted free on board, at the Indian port; imports include the cost of freight and insurance to India. Software, tourism, shipping and other services are a separate account, and so are the money flows that pay for all of it.

Who counts it. The Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics (DGCI&S) in Kolkata compiles every shipping bill and bill of entry. The Ministry of Commerce publishes quick estimates for a month about two weeks after it ends, and the detailed tables, by product and partner, a few weeks later. The RBI republishes the totals; this guide uses the Ministry's tables for detail and the RBI's for the long history, and never joins the two.

Revisions. Every month is printed three times: a provisional quick estimate, a final figure in that month's detailed table, and a revised final figure in the same month's table a year later. This guide uses the latest print and records which one each number is.

The codes. Products are classified by the Harmonized System: 2 digits for a chapter (09 is coffee, tea and spices), 4 for a heading (0902 is tea), 6 for a subheading, and India's own 8 digits for a tariff line (09024020 is black tea in packets). The 2- and 4-digit levels are comparable over time. The 6- and 8-digit codes were rewritten in April 2023, when India moved from HS 2017 to HS 2022, and some lines change each April, so this guide never draws one 8-digit line across those breaks.

Dollars and rupees. Trade is invoiced mostly in dollars, so the dollar series is the natural measure. Rupee values grow faster whenever the rupee weakens, without a single extra container leaving port.

The long view

US$ billion, financial years since 1970-71 and months since 2017

India has bought more than it sold in 54 of the 56 years since 1970-71, and the gap has widened as trade grew

The space between the two lines is the trade deficit. It is not a loss in the way a household's overspending is: India pays for it with what it earns from services, the money its workers abroad send home, and foreign investment. When the gap narrows sharply, it is usually because imports fell, not because exports boomed.

As of 2025-26

Exports $441.7 bn, imports $775.0 bn, a balance of −$333.2 bn. Exports were 24.3 times their 1990-91 level. India ran a surplus in only 2 years, 1972-73 and 1976-77. The gap narrowed most in 2020-21 and 2013-14, when imports fell.

The monthly trade deficit averaged $29.8 bn over the last twelve months, against $12.6 bn a month in 2017

How to read this

Exporters rush to ship before the financial year closes, so March is usually the peak and April falls back. Compare a month with the same month a year earlier, not with the month before. The deep trough in April 2020 is the national lockdown.

As of July 2026

The balance in July was −$31.9 bn, against −$27.9 bn a year earlier. The largest monthly deficit in this series was −$42.6 bn, in October 2025. March was the busiest export month in 7 of 9 full financial years.

05

How much of the deficit is oil and gold

US$ billion, financial years since 2009-10

Oil and gold made up more than half of India's trade deficit in every year since 2009-10; the rest has grown from $22.2 bn to $142.4 bn

The merchandise trade balance split into petroleum (crude and products, exports minus imports), gold, and everything else, US$ billion, financial years 2009-10 to 2025-26.

Source: Ministry of Commerce, TradeStat, principal commodities (FTPA): group 20 petroleum, crude and products; item G6 gold. Balances computed as exports minus imports. Source
How to read this

Each bar is one year's deficit, cut into three. India buys crude and petroleum products and also sells refined products abroad, so the petroleum bar is what it bought minus what it sold. Gold is almost all imported, for jewellery, savings and weddings, and only a little goes back out as gold itself; jewellery exports are counted in the third part. The totals come from the Ministry's commodity tables, so they differ slightly from the RBI's yearly figures in the long view above.

When oil is dear the blue part grows without India buying a barrel more. When gold is dear, Indians often buy fewer tonnes but pay more dollars.

As of 2025-26

The balance was −$334.3 bn: petroleum −$120.1 bn, gold −$71.7 bn, everything else −$142.4 bn.

The oil deficit swings with world prices; the rest of the deficit has grown more steadily

How to read this

Below zero is a deficit. The oil line falls when crude is expensive (2008, 2012 to 2014, 2022) and recovers when it is cheap (2016, 2020). In this series gold sits inside non-oil, so the grey line carries both gold and India's growing appetite for electronics, machinery and chemicals.

As of July 2026

Oil balance −$11.4 bn, non-oil balance −$20.6 bn in July 2026 (provisional).

06

What India sells, and what it buys

US$ billion, by group and by chapter

Electronics exports grew 8.6 times between 2009-10 and 2025-26, to 4th place among India's 21 export groups

How to read this

The groups are the Ministry's own: they follow how industries are organised (engineering, chemicals, textiles) rather than the customs chapters. Each bar is the latest full year; the circle is the same group fifteen years earlier, in dollars of each year, so some of the growth is inflation.

As of 2025-26

The largest export groups were chemicals & related products ($61.6 bn), petroleum crude & products ($53.8 bn) and machinery ($48.6 bn). Electronics rose from $5.6 bn to $48.0 bn.

Petroleum crude & products, electronics and gems & jewellery are what India buys most: 51.5% of its imports in 2025-26

How to read this

Read it beside the export plate. Electronics appears on both: India imports components and finished goods while exporting assembled phones, so a rise in electronics exports usually comes with a rise in electronics imports.

As of 2025-26

The largest import groups were petroleum crude & products ($173.9 bn), electronics ($116.1 bn) and gems & jewellery ($109.4 bn).

Mineral fuels and oils led India's exports in 2025-26, ahead of electrical machinery and electronics; the top twelve chapters made up 66.8% of the total

How to read this

A chapter is the customs code's broadest shelf: chapter 27 is all mineral fuels, crude and products alike; chapter 85 is electrical machinery, from phones to transformers; chapter 71 is pearls, stones, jewellery and gold. The every-cut table at the end of this guide opens each chapter into its headings and tariff lines.

As of 2025-26

The top export chapter was mineral fuels and oils (HS 27) at $55.9 bn, then electrical machinery and electronics (HS 85) at $54.0 bn.

Mineral fuels and oils led India's imports in 2025-26, ahead of pearls, stones, jewellery and gold; the top twelve chapters made up 81.6% of the total

How to read this

Imports are more concentrated than exports: a handful of chapters (fuels, electronics, gold and stones, machinery) make up most of the bill, which is why oil and gold prices move India's deficit so much.

As of 2025-26

The top import chapter was mineral fuels and oils (HS 27) at $203.4 bn, then pearls, stones, jewellery and gold (HS 71) at $109.4 bn.

07

With whom

US$ billion, financial years

India's largest trade deficit is with China (−$112.1 bn); its largest surplus is with the United States ($33.9 bn)

deficit with China, 2025-26
Source: Ministry of Commerce, TradeStat (DGCI&S), MEIDB region-wise tables, March cumulatives. Balance computed as exports minus imports. Source
How to read this

A deficit with one country is not a problem in itself: India buys crude from the Gulf and Russia because it produces far too little of its own (see the crude oil plate below), and pays for it partly with what it sells to the United States and Europe. Countries are where goods come from or go to as declared at customs, so goods routed through the UAE or Singapore count against those hubs.

As of 2025-26

India ran a deficit with 84 of 225 partners. Deficit with China −$112.1 bn; surplus with the United States $33.9 bn.

The deficit with China grew from $29.3 bn in 2010-11 to $112.1 bn in 2025-26; the surplus with the United States from $5.2 bn to $33.9 bn

How to read this

This is a separate ministry table from the monthly partner tables above, so it reaches back to 2009-10. The two agree where they overlap but are drawn apart.

As of 2025-26

India bought $131.6 bn from China and sold it $19.5 bn. It sold the United States $87.3 bn and bought $53.5 bn.

How to read this

Read the two lists against each other. Where a chapter appears on both, India is often buying parts, machines and chemicals from China to make goods it then sells abroad: electrical machinery bought as components can leave as finished phones. A chapter is a broad shelf, so the same number can hide very different goods; the every-cut table at the end goes down to the heading.

As of 2025-26

Top export to the United States: electrical machinery and electronics, $25.7 bn. Top import from China: electrical machinery and electronics, $46.4 bn.

Prices or volumes

Indices, tonnes, and the rupee

Between 2013-14 and 2025-26, the volume of India's imports rose 92% and their average price 55%

Unit value (price) and quantum (volume) indices of exports and imports, 2012-13 = 100, financial years 2013-14 to 2025-26. DGCI&S indices.

net terms of trade, latest year
Source: RBI, DBIE report 379 (DGCI&S index numbers), base 2012-13 = 100. The export volume index for the latest year is withheld: see the note below. Source
How to read this

A unit value index tracks the average price per unit of the goods traded; a quantum index tracks how much was traded. When an export headline says "record", ask which one moved. The net terms of trade divide export prices by import prices: above 100 means a unit of exports buys more imports than it did in 2012-13.

The indices cover only goods that are counted in units, so they move less tidily than the dollar totals. The export volume index in particular jumps from year to year in ways the value of exports does not; read it as rough.

As of 2025-26

Export prices stood at 171.9 and import prices at 168.0 (2012-13 = 100). The export volume index for the latest year is not shown: the RBI's table prints a figure that cannot be reconciled with the value of exports.

India bought 90% of its crude oil abroad in 2025-26, against 65% in 1972-73

How to read this

Tonnes do not change with the price of oil, so this is the plate to read when the dollar bill for crude jumps. India's own oil fields have produced less each year for over a decade while refining has grown, so every extra litre of fuel the country uses is, in effect, imported.

As of 2025-26

Imported 245.8 million tonnes, produced 26.0 million tonnes.

Measured in rupees, exports grew faster than in dollars in 29 of the 35 years since 1991-92: the rupee weakened against the dollar in most of them

How to read this

The gap between the two lines is, roughly, how much the rupee lost against the dollar that year. A headline that reports exports in rupees will usually look better than one in dollars; neither is wrong, but only the dollar figure tells you whether India sold more to the world.

As of 2025-26

Exports grew 0.9% in dollars and 5.4% in rupees.

10

What this measures, and what it leaves out

The figures count goods, valued in dollars at the exchange rates customs notifies every fortnight, at the moment they cross the border. They do not count services, which India sells well: software, business services and travel earn a large share of India's foreign income and make its overall deficit with the world much smaller than its deficit in goods. That is the subject of the external account guide.

They do not say who made the goods or where the value was added. A phone exported from India may contain a Chinese screen, a Korean chip and an Indian assembly line; the full price counts as an Indian export and the parts count as imports. They also do not say where goods were finally used: oil shipped to a Dutch port may end up in Germany.

Smuggled goods, informal border trade and goods that never pass customs are missing. So are values hidden by mis-invoicing. And a small share of trade every month has no country assigned ("unspecified"), which can swing a partner's figure.

11

How to misread these numbers

  • 1

"Exports hit a record this month."

Check three things first. Was the same month a year ago unusually weak, so that growth is flattered by the base? Did oil prices rise, lifting the value of petroleum-product exports without any more being shipped? And is it March, when exports peak every year? A record in dollars can be an ordinary month in tonnes.

  • 2

"The trade deficit means India is losing money."

A country that imports crude to refine and gold to save will run a goods deficit. What matters is whether services earnings, remittances and investment cover it, which is what the current account and the reserves show.

  • 3

"India's deficit with China is money flowing to China."

Partner balances describe where goods were declared to come from and go to. Much of what India buys from China becomes something India sells elsewhere: phones, medicines made from Chinese ingredients, solar panels. A bilateral deficit is not a measure of dependence or loss on its own.

  • 4

"Gold imports fell, so Indians are buying less gold."

Imports are measured in dollars. When the gold price rises sharply, Indians often buy fewer tonnes but pay more; when it falls they may buy more weight for less money. Look at the quantity, in kilograms, before concluding anything about demand.

  • 5

"Exports grew 12% in rupees, so exporters did well."

If the rupee fell 8% against the dollar that year, most of that growth is the exchange rate. The dollar figure tells you whether the world bought more from India.

  • 6

"This tariff line jumped tenfold, so a new industry was born."

At 8 digits, codes are rewritten every few years and a line can absorb goods that used to be counted elsewhere. Before reading a jump at the tariff-line level, check the 4-digit heading it belongs to.

Sources, method and revisions

Source of record

Commodity and partner detail: Ministry of Commerce and Industry, TradeStat (tradestat.commerce.gov.in), which publishes DGCI&S customs data: the monthly export-import data bank (MEIDB), principal-commodity tables (FTPA and FTSPCC). The long history and the oil split: RBI, Database on Indian Economy, read from our archived copy of DBIE. Data vintage 2026-10-09.

Checked against the Ministry's quick-estimates release of 13 August 2026: gold imports for July 2025 (US$ 3,974 million), rice exports (US$ 921 million) and coal imports (US$ 2,361 million) match these tables to the million, and 2025-26 exports total US$ 441,452 million in both.

Method

Every TradeStat table this guide uses is archived as served. A month's value is the revised print from the table a year later where one exists, else its own final print; the principal-commodity monthly values are differences of the published running totals. Balances, growth rates and shares are computed here. Nothing is estimated or filled in.

TradeStat's annual bank (EIDB) is not used: its 2023-24 commodity tables count every shipment twice (the chapters add up to exactly twice the printed total), which is why some figures for that year circulate at double their true size.

Revisions and breaks

Three prints per month (provisional, final, revised final), recorded per value. The 6- and 8-digit codes changed with HS 2022 in April 2023 and are kept in separate yearly files; 2- and 4-digit series run through. The RBI's index numbers sit on three bases (1978-79, 1999-2000, 2012-13), never joined; its export volume index for 2025-26 is withheld as a broken print.

This guide

Version 1.0, built October 2026 from data to July 2026. Revised each month when the Ministry publishes the next tables.
