One country, many economies.
Each state measures its own economy, and the gaps between them are wider than between many countries. This guide sets every state and union territory side by side: how much it produces, how much that is per person, how fast it grows, and what it runs on.
The current reading
MoSPI, fixed panel, 2024-25What the richest state produces per person, as a multiple of what the poorest produces, among the 31 states and union territories that report every year since 2011-12. In 2011-12 the multiple was 11.9×.
In FY25 the richest state's income per person was ₹6,46,183 and the poorest's ₹69,211, a multiple of 9.34. That is down from 9.41 a year earlier, a fourth straight year of narrowing. The narrowest reading the panel shows is older and lower: 8.46 in FY14, below today's level, with the present run of declines dating only to FY21. The narrowing is genuine, then, but it is small and recent. Across all states the spread closed a little: measured by the coefficient of variation, it was 49.6% in FY25, down 0.1 points from 49.7%. One measure runs the other way, on constant prices the richest-poorest multiple widened to 9.44 from 9.01. The typical state's economy grew 7.4% in real terms, down 0.4 points from 7.8%, while the median state's income per person was ₹2,58,196, up 10.1%; the richest's rose 10.4% and the poorest's 11.3%.
What these figures measure is production per resident, not what a family takes home. A worker who crosses a state border is counted where they work, so the states that draw them in look richer and the states they leave look poorer. Each state counts once, whatever its size. In FY25 the richest state produced about 9.3 times as much per person as the poorest. In rupees the distance between them kept growing even as the multiple narrowed, and the latest year is an estimate each state will revise. Whether living standards have converged as much as production has, we do not know.
Income per person, state by state
Per-capita NSDP, ₹ a year, current pricesSikkim produces 9 times as much per person as Bihar
Per-capita net state domestic product is everything produced inside a state in a year, less the wear on its machines and buildings, divided by the people who live there. It is the closest thing to an average income each state publishes, but it measures production, not what people take home: a factory's profits count where the factory stands, even when its owners live elsewhere.
Divide by 365 to get a feel for it. A figure of ₹73,000 is about ₹200 a day per person, before anyone has paid for food, rent or school fees, and before the money is split, very unequally, between wages, profits and taxes.
Highest: Sikkim, ₹6,46,183. Lowest: Bihar, ₹69,211, about ₹190 a day. The median state produced ₹2,58,196 per person. Fifteen states and union territories have already published 2025-26, mostly as advance estimates.
Is the gap closing?
A fixed panel of states, 2011-12 onwardThe multiple between the richest and poorest state has narrowed
A ratio compares only the two ends. The spread across all states, measured by how far the typical state sits from the average, tells the same story more fully; it is in the note beside this one and in the data. Both count every state once, whatever its size: Sikkim weighs as much as Uttar Pradesh.
A falling multiple means poorer states grew a little faster in percentage terms. The rupee distance can still widen. Ten per cent of a large income is more rupees than twelve per cent of a small one, which is why the gap can close and widen at the same time.
The multiple went from 11.9× in 2011-12 to 9.3× in 2024-25. The spread across states fell from 58.0% to 49.6%. In rupees the distance between the richest and the poorest grew from ₹2,37,694 to ₹5,76,972 a year.
How big each state's economy is
GSDP, ₹ lakh crore, current pricesMaharashtra is the largest economy among the states; the five largest make about 48% of the total
Gross state domestic product is the value of everything produced inside a state's borders in a year, at the prices of that year. It is the state's own version of GDP, and the measure behind every claim that one state is "a trillion-dollar economy".
Size and prosperity are different questions. Uttar Pradesh is one of the largest economies here and one of the poorest per person, because it is home to more people than almost any country in the world. Goa and Sikkim are small economies and among the richest per person.
The largest: Maharashtra, ₹46.2 lakh crore, then Tamil Nadu, ₹31.2 lakh crore and Uttar Pradesh, ₹30.2 lakh crore. The five largest produce 48.0% of the total of the states shown. Maharashtra's economy is 4.7× the size of Bihar's.
Who grows fastest, and are poorer states catching up?
Real growth, 2011-12 to 2024-25Mizoram grew fastest after inflation; Goa slowest
Each bar is one state's average yearly growth over thirteen years, after removing price increases. Over that span, a state growing at 7% a year doubles its economy in about ten years; one growing at 5% takes about fourteen. Small differences in yearly growth add up to large differences in where a state ends up.
The span includes the 2020-21 lockdown year, when nearly every state's economy shrank, and the rebound after it. A state that fell less and recovered fast looks better here than one that grew faster before 2020.
Fastest: Mizoram, 9.7% a year. Slowest: Goa, 3.2%. The median rate was 6.0% a year. In 2020-21, 29 of the 33 states with figures shrank.
Poorer states have grown faster per person, but not by much
Economists call it convergence: poorer places growing faster than richer ones, so that the distance shrinks over time. The correlation in the corner measures how strongly the dots slope. Minus one would mean every poorer state grew faster; zero means income in 2011-12 tells you nothing about growth since; plus one would mean the rich pulled away.
Growth here is per person, so a state whose population grows fast needs faster growth of its economy just to stand still.
The correlation is −0.31. Bihar, the poorest state in 2011-12, grew its income per person by 4.0% a year; Goa, the richest, by 2.2%.
What each state's economy runs on
Share of GSVA, current pricesFarming is 41% of Madhya Pradesh's value added and 0.3% of Delhi's
Gross value added is what each industry adds to the materials it buys: a mill's value added is its cloth less its cotton, power and dyes. The shares say where a state's income is made, not where its people work. Farming's share of value added is far smaller than its share of jobs in almost every state, which is the arithmetic behind low farm incomes.
Farming's share is highest in Madhya Pradesh, 41.3% and lowest in Delhi, 0.3%. Industry's share is highest in Sikkim, 63.2%. Services' share is highest in Chandigarh, 89.4%.
Manufacturing ranges from a sliver to 38% of a state's value added, in Sikkim
Read across a row to see one state's economy; read down a column to see which states lean on an industry. The real estate column also holds professional services, software among them, and the rent people would pay on homes they own, an imputed figure; that is why it is largest where software and business services cluster. Mining stands out where there are minerals, coal or oil, as in Assam, Odisha, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh; Goa's iron ore mining has been largely shut since 2018. Public administration is large where the government is the main employer, as in the north-east, Jammu and Kashmir and the island territories.
Manufacturing's share is highest in Sikkim, 38.4%. Mining's is highest in Assam, 14.0%. Public administration's is highest in Manipur, 18.5%. Financial services' is highest in Delhi, 12.6%.
State finances
Debt and deficit, per cent of GSDPArunachal Pradesh's government owes 51% of its GSDP, Delhi's 2%
A state's debt is what its government owes: market loans, loans from the centre, and the provident funds and deposits it holds for others. Set against the size of its economy, it says how heavy the load is. Each state's own fiscal responsibility law sets its deficit limit, usually 3% of GSDP, and the centre has allowed more in some years.
Interest on that debt comes before roads, schools and hospitals. A state that owes a large share of its GSDP spends a large share of its revenue on interest, which is money it cannot spend on its people.
Highest debt: Arunachal Pradesh, 50.6%. Lowest: Delhi, 1.6%. The median state owed 32.0% of its GSDP. Largest deficit that year: Himachal Pradesh, 6.5% of GSDP. These are the latest actuals the Handbook carries for most states; later years are budget or revised estimates and are left out.

Click a heading to sortEvery state and union territory MoSPI serves, with the latest year each has published. Sort by any column. Years differ between states because each publishes on its own timetable; the column beside the figure says which year it is. Jammu and Kashmir appears twice: as the state, with Ladakh, to 2018-19, and as the union territory from 2019-20. Nothing is filled in where a state has not published.

The same state in other guides
State figures for prices, jobs, spending and more live in the guides for those measures, each from its own source of record. Every state and union territory also has a profile of its own, drawing them together: the state profiles.
What this measures
India has no single statistician for its states. Each state's Directorate of Economics and Statistics estimates its own domestic product, following methods the National Statistical Office sets, and sends the figures to MoSPI, which publishes them together. Some items cannot be measured inside one state, such as railways, banking, communications and central government, so the national totals for those are shared out between states by formulas based on things like deposits, employees or traffic.
Every figure here is on the 2011-12 base: values at constant prices are in 2011-12 rupees, which is how growth after inflation is measured. India's national accounts moved to a 2022-23 base in 2026. The state series have not moved yet, so state figures cannot be added up and compared with the new national GDP.
States publish on their own timetables. The latest year is usually an advance or quick estimate and is revised, sometimes by several per cent, as tax, crop and company data arrive. MoSPI does not label which years are final for which state, and neither do we know. Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are shown separately from 2011-12, as each state now estimates its own past. Jammu and Kashmir is shown as two series because its territory changed in October 2019.
The RBI's Handbook of Statistics on Indian States reprints these figures with a lag of about a year and adds state finances, farm output, power, roads, banking, health and prices. Its domestic product tables match MoSPI's exactly up to 2020-21; for later years the Handbook carries an older round of revisions. This guide draws on MoSPI for the economy and on the Handbook for state finances, and bakes every Handbook table into its data.
How to misread these numbers
- 1
"People in Delhi earn seven times what people in Bihar earn."
Per-capita product counts what is produced in a place, divided by the people who live there. Lakhs of people produce inside Delhi, Goa or Chandigarh but live outside, so those figures are inflated; states that send workers away, like Bihar, produce less than their people earn, because remittances from Mumbai or Dubai are counted where the work is done. Household spending surveys, in the consumption guide, show a much smaller gap.
- 2
"Sikkim is the richest state, so Sikkimese are the richest Indians."
Sikkim's figure is large production from hydropower and pharmaceutical plants divided by a small population. Much of the profit belongs to companies based elsewhere. A high per-capita product in a small state can describe a few large plants more than the lives of its people.
- 3
"The states add up to India's GDP."
They do not, quite. Some states have not published the latest year, the state figures are on the 2011-12 base while national GDP has moved to 2022-23, and states revise on their own timetables. Compare states with each other, not with a sum.
- 4
"This state grew 12% last year."
Check whether that is at current or constant prices. A state's economy measured in the rupees of each year grows with prices as well as output. Real growth, at constant prices, is the one to compare. And the latest year is an estimate that will be revised.
- 5
"Poor states are catching up, so the problem is solving itself."
The multiple between the richest and poorest has narrowed, but the gap in rupees has kept growing, and at recent rates it would take decades for the poorest states to reach today's middle.

Every series, every cut
All 16,879 series behind this guide, from 228 files, at every level the source publishes them, including the ones no chart above draws. Find a state, an item or a sector, sort by the latest value or by the change on a year earlier, and download any file whole. A dash means no published figure for that cut, no figure for a year earlier, or a change that would mean nothing. Where a source explicitly leaves a survey cut unpublished, its known period and reason stay visible.
