Where Indians keep their money.
Every year the Reserve Bank asks every bank in the country who its depositors are, what kind of account they hold, what interest they earn and how long their money is locked away. The answers describe the savings of a nation that still trusts the bank more than anything else.
The current reading
RBI BSR-2, as on 31 March 2026Everything Indian households held in commercial banks on 31 March: savings accounts, fixed deposits and current accounts, from individuals, small shops and partnerships to charities and self-help groups.
Households held ₹158.1 lakh crore in banks, 59.3% of everything deposited by anyone. Of their money, 54.7% sat in fixed deposits, 39.9% in savings accounts and 5.4% in current accounts.
Individuals' fixed deposits have moved with interest rates. In March 2022, 79.2% of that money earned less than 6% a year; by March 2026, only 6.3% did, and most of it earned between 6 and 8%.
They do not say how much each family has saved. These are totals across every account in the country, and a few very large deposits weigh as much as millions of small ones. Nor do they count money in post office schemes, cooperative banks, mutual funds, shares or gold, which together hold much of what households save.
The household sector also includes small businesses run as proprietorships and partnerships, so a shop's working capital counts here. The interest-rate, maturity and size tables cover individuals only, a narrower group.
Savings accounts and fixed deposits
Household deposits by type, ₹ lakh croreAbout half of household bank money has always been in fixed deposits
Three lines, one for each kind of account. The pale lines on the left are the old definition of a household, used until March 2018; the solid lines from March 2019 use the new one, which follows the international system of national accounts. The two cannot be joined into one series, so the chart leaves a gap where the definition changed.
A savings account is money you can spend tomorrow. A fixed deposit is money you have agreed to leave alone for a set time in return for a higher rate. The split between the two is a rough measure of how much households are saving rather than simply keeping.
Fixed deposits ₹86.6 lakh crore, savings accounts ₹63.0 lakh crore, current accounts ₹8.5 lakh crore. Fixed deposits were 54.7% of household deposits, against 52.7% in March 2019.
At what interest rate
Individuals' fixed deposits by the rate they earnIn 2022 four-fifths of fixed-deposit money earned below 6%; by 2026 about one rupee in sixteen did
Each bar is one year's stock of fixed deposits held by individuals, split by the interest rate each deposit was booked at. Darker blue means a higher rate. Because deposits are locked at the rate of the day they were made, the stock changes slowly: a rate cut takes a year or two to work through, as old deposits mature and are renewed at the new rate.
The rate on a deposit is not what the saver keeps. Inflation and tax both take a share, so a 6% deposit in a year of 6% inflation earns nothing in real terms before tax.
Below 6%: 6.3% of the money. Between 6 and 7%: 47.5%. Between 7 and 8%: 41.1%. Eight per cent or more: 5.1%. Four years earlier, in March 2022, 79.2% earned below 6%.
For how long, and in what size
Individuals' fixed deposits, latest yearMost fixed-deposit money comes due within a year
Time left to maturity tells you how quickly deposits will be renewed at new rates. When most money comes due within a year, a change in interest rates reaches savers quickly. It also shows how short a horizon most savers keep: few lock money away for more than three years.
Within a year: 69.4% of the money. One to three years: 26.3%. Three years or more: 4.2%.
Most of the money sits in deposits of ₹1 lakh to ₹15 lakh
Each bar is the total held in deposits of a given size. Small deposits are numerous but hold little; the middle bands hold most of individuals' money. For companies and institutions the picture is the opposite, with deposits of a crore or more dominating, which is why individuals are shown here on their own.
Deposits of ₹1 lakh to ₹15 lakh hold 62.3% of individuals' fixed-deposit money; deposits under ₹1 lakh, 5.9%; deposits of ₹1 crore or more, 6.4%.
Where, and whose
Household deposits by place, and women's depositsTwo-fifths of household deposits sit in metropolitan branches
Deposits are counted where the branch is, not where the depositor lives, so city branches collect some money from the towns around them. Even so, the gap is large: a rural branch serves many more depositors, each with far less.
Metropolitan branches held 41.7% of household deposits and rural branches 15.6%. Women held 20.8% of all bank deposits, against 17.9% in March 2019.
Who else keeps money in banks
Deposits by owning sector, all banks, ₹ lakh croreHouseholds still hold most of the money, but their share has slipped as companies keep more in banks
Every deposit has an owner, and the RBI sorts owners the way national accountants do: government, companies that make or sell things (non-financial corporations), financial firms, households, and people and firms abroad. Households include individuals and the small businesses, trusts and self-help groups that households run.
The shares move slowly, so a change of a few points over seven years is large. A falling household share does not mean households saved less; it can mean companies parked more cash in banks, or that households moved savings to mutual funds and shares.
Households 59.3% of deposits (63.2% in 2019). Non-financial companies 18.5% (14.2%). Government 8.3%. Non-resident Indians 5.7%. Self-help groups 0.3%.
How old the savers are
Deposits of individuals by age, ₹ lakh crorePeople over 60 hold two-fifths of what individuals keep in banks, and most of it in fixed deposits
Each bar is the money held by people of one age group, the darker part in fixed deposits. Savings build over a working life and are spent slowly after it, so the older groups hold the most. Older savers also keep more of it fixed, for the interest.
This is why a cut in deposit rates is felt hardest by retired households: for many of them the interest on a fixed deposit is a monthly income, not a bonus.
Aged 60 and above: 39.9% of individuals' deposits (37.8% in March 2023), 67.3% of it in fixed deposits. Aged 25 to 39: 19.5%. Under 18: 1.1%.
Women's share of individuals' deposits runs from under a third to nearly half, state by state
A deposit is counted under the name of its holder. Where the bar is long, more of the money in individuals' names is in women's names; that is not the same as women controlling it, but it is a measure of whose name the account opens in.
Highest: Meghalaya, 47.2%. Lowest: Ladakh, 30.2%. All India: 41.2%, against 32.5% in March 2019.
Where the money sits
Deposits by state and district, all banksMaharashtra holds more than a fifth of India's bank deposits; three states hold nearly two-fifths
A state's share of deposits reflects where firms and governments bank as much as where families save. Mumbai's branches hold the accounts of companies operating across the country.
Maharashtra 22.6%, the next two (Delhi and Karnataka) 16.8%. 17 states and union territories hold less than 1% each.
Twenty-six of India's nearly 800 districts hold half of all bank deposits
Each bar is one district's share of the country's deposits. Mumbai's two districts and Bengaluru Urban alone hold about a fifth. Most districts hold well under half a per cent each, though they are where most depositors live.
Mumbai 15.0% (two districts), Bengaluru Urban 5.6%. Districts that together hold half of all deposits: 26 of 777.
Which banks, and who works in them
Bank groups, deposits and staffPrivate banks' share of deposits rose by about six points in seven years, mostly from public sector banks
Each line is a group's share of the country's deposits. Public sector banks still hold more than half, but private banks have gained every year. Regional rural banks, the deposit-takers of the countryside, have been slowly losing share.
Public sector banks 55.3% (62.6% in 2019), private banks 35.5% (29.1%), foreign banks 4.7%, regional rural banks 2.9%, small finance banks 1.4%.
Women are a quarter of bank employees, and fewer still in small finance banks
The share of women among bank staff has crept up from about 24% to 26% since 2019. It is lowest in the small finance banks and the payments banks, the two newest kinds of bank.
Bank employees: 19,14,688, 26.2% of them women. Highest share: Foreign banks, 32.5%. Lowest: Small finance banks, 14.3%.
Booked for how long, and the quarterly return
Term deposits by original term; deposits by quarterSeven in ten rupees in fixed deposits are now booked for one to three years, up from half in 2022
Each band is a share of the money in fixed deposits. When rates are expected to rise, savers book short so they can renew at a better rate; when rates are high, they lock in for longer. The shift since 2022 into one-to-three-year deposits followed the rise in deposit rates.
One to three years: 69.8%. Under a year: 20.4%. Five years and more: 5.1% (13.9% in 2019).
Between the annual returns, deposits grew every quarter, and the household share dips each March
The quarterly return is a second instrument: it covers the same banks except the regional rural banks, so its March total sits a few lakh crore below the annual figure. Read it for movement within the year. The household share falls each March, as the deposits of companies and governments swell at the close of the financial year.
Deposits ₹261.9 lakh crore in the latest quarter, +11.5% on a year earlier. Households' share 58.8%.
What this measures
The Basic Statistical Return 2 is an annual census, not a sample: every scheduled commercial bank, including regional rural banks, reports every deposit account it holds on 31 March, classified by who owns it, what type of account it is, its interest rate, its term and its size. The Reserve Bank publishes the totals a few months later.
"Household sector" is a statistical category. It covers individuals and Hindu undivided families, the businesses households run without incorporating them, and non-profit bodies that serve households, such as self-help groups and trusts. The tables on interest rate, maturity and size are published for individuals only.
The classification of owners changed with the 2018-19 return to match the international system of national accounts. The old and new household series measure related but different things, so this guide shows them apart and never adds one to the other.
Two totals appear in the RBI's tables. The ownership tables (1.x) include deposits that banks keep with other banks; the tables by type, place and term (2.x and 3.x) leave them out, so they run about ₹6 lakh crore lower. Since 2023 the RBI also runs a quarterly return, which leaves out regional rural banks. This guide never mixes the three: each chart says which table it reads.
How to misread these numbers
- 1
"The average Indian has this much in the bank."
These are totals. Divided by the population they give an average that describes almost nobody: a few large accounts hold a large share, and many people hold very little.
- 2
"Fixed deposits pay 7%, so savers are doing well."
Only after inflation and tax. A deposit earning 7% in a year of 5% inflation gains about 2% in real terms before tax, and interest is taxed at the saver's income-tax rate.
- 3
"Households are saving less because bank deposits grew slowly."
Bank deposits are one place to save. Money moving into mutual funds, shares, insurance or gold is still saved; it simply sits outside these tables.
- 4
"Women hold a fifth of deposits, so they own a fifth of savings."
Accounts are counted under the name of the holder, and families often open accounts in one member's name for reasons of convenience or tax. The share is a measure of accounts, not of control over money.
Every series, every cut
All 23,214 series behind this guide, from 56 files, at every level the source publishes them, including the ones no chart above draws. Find a state, an item or a sector, sort by the latest value or by the change on a year earlier, and download any file whole. A dash means no published figure for that cut, no figure for a year earlier, or a change that would mean nothing. Where a source explicitly leaves a survey cut unpublished, its known period and reason stay visible.
